“Blink Twice” is a standout and somewhat sneaky film for me this year.

Written and directed by Zoe Kravitz in her directorial debut, this psychological thriller stars Naomi Ackie (Wanna Dance with Somebody) and Kravitz’s boyfriend Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, Deadpool & Wolverine), building an immersive sensory experience driven by tension through masterful sound design and editing.

In “Blink Twice,” the story follows Ackie’s character, Frida, as she charms her way to an island owned by billionaire playboy Slater King (played by Tatum), who also happens to own the company she works for. Slater has recently been involved in a major public relations scandal and needs to improve his public image. To do so, he decides to host an event to demonstrate that he has worked on himself and wants to showcase the “new” him.

The plot revolves around the island where Slater and his male friends are accompanied by female companions. However, the situation takes a dark turn when one of the women starts feeling uneasy about Slater and his friends, knowing the island is far from civilization and aid.

The mind games continue, leaving the audience to wonder if the bizarre events are due to drug and alcohol binging, or if there is truly something sinister happening on the island.

The film production had a lively, summery feel, distracting from hidden dangers.

The story is enhanced by Kravitz’s pristine music selection and the brilliantly written script, transporting the viewer into a head spinning psychological thriller where reality and sanity is often mistrusted.

This movie wasn’t on my list of “must-see” films this year, and I actually went in without knowing anything about it. I recommend others approach this movie the same way, allowing the twists to be experienced with a fresh eye. Then, maybe see it a second time to really absorb the nuances of the film’s rich mesmerizing details.

With an enormous trigger warning at the opening, I knew I was in for a treat.

Ackie gives an impressive performance, and this may be some of Tatum’s finest acting to date. His character pushed him to show a range I didn’t know he had.

“Blink Twice” is at the top of the thriller genre, with comical moments to keep the summery vibes going.
